Circus Tokyo · No. 1

Why it is number one

Circus has built its entire identity around how the room sounds when it's full of people. They ripped out the old sound system and rebuilt it, testing rival rigs tournament style on the floor and tuning it so the DJ and the crowd hear the exact same thing, resulting in some crazy sets. The room holds around 250, so the floor is completely full on nights other venues would call quiet. I ran an event here on a Wednesday night and it felt as packed as a Boiler Room, but if that gets too much for you there's a calmer upstairs bar where you can talk. You'll never find this place by asking ChatGPT or Google where to go, and it's far enough out of the way that nobody arrives by accident, so the room fills up with people who actually care about the culture and the details. About the details: they've got an indoor smoking area, a bar on the dancefloor, another upstairs, a beer vending machine in the stairwell, as well as a DJ booth on each floor. Every night I spend here feels immersive.

Womb

Four floors under the largest mirror ball in Asia.

What you get

Big international techno, drum and bass bookings regularly land here.
Each floor runs its own room and vibe, so one ticket will get you four different nights without ever leaving the building.
The main floor uses d&b audiotechnik speakers, built to stay loud without getting harsh.
Open since 2000, and ranked 67th in the world in DJ Mag's 2021 list.

Vent

House and techno bookings bigger than the room suggests.

What you get

A full wall of speakers faces into a tiny, crowded room.
Photography is banned on the floor and the rule is heavily enforced.
One compact space so it stays intimate, but even at capacity there's no bad spot to stand.

Enter

While everywhere else is closing, Enter is just getting good.

What you get

Most bars and clubs in Tokyo close at 5am, but Enter is open until 9am.
They play electronic music all night and the crowd keeps getting bigger into the morning. The room is almost always full until at least 8am.
Just one floor under our next recommendation, Lion.

What you get

A small bar and club with almost no lighting. It's open till 6 or 7 in the morning.
Saloon is perfect for postgaming.
Circus and Saloon share the same ownership, and the same DJ booking.
It sits right under our next recommendation, Unit, so you can move between the two.

This place makes nightlife feel like a concert.

What you get

It has a full live house stage and a sound system to match.
About 600 people fit inside, so it almost feels like a small concert but still remains quite intimate.
The building has three levels and Unit sits in between a cafe upstairs and Saloon below, so you could technically spend your entire day here.

Concert hall scale comes with a full LED wall behind the stage. The biggest events in Tokyo are run here.
About 1,300 people fit inside when it sells out, and the energy is crazy.
A balcony runs above the main floor, so there's a clear view even when it sells out.

A higher-end option, with four floors and table service.

What you get

DJ booths on every floor, with different levels of tables to match.
Excellent bottle service, and depending on the floor it almost feels like a more luxury club experience. The price reflects that though.
A solar system light rig hangs over the 600 capacity main floor.
Between all four floors the capacity is 1,000 people, and each level runs an entirely different mood, so you can bounce between them all night.
It ranked inside DJ Mag's top 40 in 2022 all the way to 2024.
